Our Mission
Read for Joy Inc. is the official nonprofit programming partner of Black Worldschoolers Mobile
Bookstore, transforming reading from a duty to a delight through joy-centered literary programs
and experiences that support historically marginalized communities' social, cultural, and educational
well-being.
Our Vision
We envision a world where communities thrive through the transformative power of literature.
Literacy & Joy
At Read for Joy Inc., we believe that literacy is more than an academic task—it is a way of seeing, feeling, and understanding the world. It is about finding our voices, connecting to our stories, and making sense of our experiences. Literacy isn’t just about reading books; it’s about what those books spark within us.
But literacy without joy is incomplete.
Dr. Gholdy Muhammad reminds us that joy is not just happiness—it is wellness, healing, and working toward something greater. It is what sustains us through struggle. It is found in the beauty of our voices, the rhythm of our music, the depth of our creativity, and the power of our collective learning. Joy is doing things together, lifting each other up, and seeing ourselves reflected in what we read.
We Value
At Read for Joy Inc., our work is rooted in values that uplift individuals, families, and entire communities through the power of literacy.
Audio Literacy—We value the power of oral storytelling, ensuring that all learners, regardless of reading ability, can engage with literature through aloud, storytelling hotlines, and spoken-word experiences.
Pictorial Literacy – We value visual storytelling and artistic expression as essential to literacy. Through illustrations, graphic novels, picture books, and creative art experiences, we help readers of all ages engage with stories in meaningful and transformative ways.
Cultural Literacy – We value literature as a tool for identity, empowerment, and legacy-building, ensuring that Black stories, histories, and traditions are at the heart of our programming.
Intergenerational Learning – We value the exchange of knowledge, stories, and traditions across generations, fostering family and community connections through shared reading, discussions, and storytelling.
Well-Being – We value literacy as a pathway to social, emotional, and cultural well-being, ensuring that our programs nurture self-confidence, joy, and a sense of belonging for all.
